| Brynarth stud was started through two people (myself and my partner lee) having a huge interest in the welsh breeds. I have always been involved with horses from the day I was born. My first pony was a Section A named Toby, who was full of character and one of the best first ponies you could ask for. I’m always very competitive and competed in gymkhana games. After Toby I followed on with various ponies competing in show jumping, gymkhana games, and anything that involved speed. Once I had grown out of my ponies my parents brought me my first horse at age 14, she was a welsh part bred mare by Hewid Cardi called Ford Croft Twilight (Abbie). She was a mare of great quality and was everything I could ever want. In 2001 I left school and wanted a career in the equine industry so I decided to attend Lackham College in Chippenham. My first year was studying A First Diploma in Horse care, after completing the course I was intrigued to learn more about these great animals so I stayed for a further 2 years and completed my National Diploma in Horse Management with an overall grade of Distinction-Distinction-merit and took home the student of the year trophy. (Not that I’m blowing my own trumpet!) The course covered various aspects of the horse from Breeding to animal science I completed the following sections- First diploma in Horse care National Diploma in Horse Management NVQ Level 2 in horse care Which contained 8 modules Which contained 15 Modules Which contained 9 modules The BHS Riding & road Safety The BHS Stage 1 care The BHS Stage 1 Riding Appointed peron/emergancy aid training First aid at work Dodson & Horrell Product & nutrition certificate level Merit I Finished college in July 2004 and moved to Thornbury Bristol with my partner Lee, who also has great interest in horses. Lee and his farther have owned horses for many years, breaking young stock to ride and drive. Lee and his father had a Section D Colt Brynmelys Joshua who was brought with the intent of selling him on, Lee and Brynmelys Joshua had a bond that everyone could see, and in 2003 Lee gained full ownership of Brynmelys Joshua, and little did I know this was the start of Brynarth Stud. In 2005 I lost my mare Abbie to aged related colic, and was devastated. Lee knew I would not be able to afford to buy another horse at this time, and without me knowing he went to the Royal welsh sales in 2004 and purchased Bodwenarth Romeo a Section C colt Foal. When I returned home from work that day there was a tiny little chestnut colt in the stable, and I have not looked back from that day. We both decided that although we had full time jobs, we would like to run our own stud and ensure our stallions achieved their full potential, but where did we start? The welsh breeds soon became a big part of our lives, showing most weekends and researching the history of the breeds, although horses including the welsh sections had been a large part of our lives, neither of us knew quite how much we would grow to appreciate them, we had officially been bitten by the welsh bug. We found ourselves growing more and more interested in the welsh sections mainly the welsh cob and pony of cob type, but we were unsure where to take our interests and then...In September 2006 a Section D mare owned by Lee's father found her way through 2 fences and over a 5 bar gate into our stallions paddock!!! Needless to say she knew what she wanted, and 11 months down the line we had our first foal although unplanned and very late being born at the tail end of August Brynarth Odyssey was defiantly a mistake we would not have changed. During the long 11month gestation period we started to question our future with the welsh breed, watching the studs and producers in the show ring and looking at past and present ambassadors of the WPCS, which brought upon us a passion that neither of us knew was there. Our future has since been mapped out, unsure of how we made the decision, we are both happy that we will not turn back and aim for great things with Brynarth stud using our passion and love for the welsh breed to drive us forward. Since this time we have made investments and decisions that will set Brynarth stud up for the future including developing our new purpose built yard (please see facilities page) and will continue to strive towards our now heart set dream of breeding quality true to type welsh cobs and ponies of cob type of which will excel and promote the welsh breeds. |
